This year, dear Reader, in the spirit of obsessions, affairs and Valentine’s Day, I’m so excited to share the first day of a FOURTEEN DAY COOKBOOK GIVEAWAY!!
Several of my fellow food blogging friends and I have gathered up fourteen of our favorite cookbooks and we are going to be giving away one cookbook, each day for the first fourteen days of February!
It’s no secret that we all love cookbooks – even as our beloved authors begin to offer future writings only in digital form, I can’t tear myself away from a printed, old-fashioned cookbook. I love spreading that cookbook across my counter while cursing the lack of counter space that my counter offers as I check the list of ingredients one more time. But I love the splatter of sauces and grease across the pages that show how well loved each recipe is. Each splatter holds a memory, brings back a smell… at the very least a smile, and sometimes a smirk – if its a recipe that wasn’t so well liked. The notes in the margin? Priceless. A cookbook lover revels in reading a new cookbook in bed, cover to cover, marking the recipes to try and reading the stories, anecdotes and tips along the way and feeling as if the author is there just coaching you along. I love the look of cookbooks lining bookshelves, filling the nooks and crannies of my kitchen, stacked atop the refrigerator – each are a reminder of dishes I’ve loved, places I’ve visited, places I want to visit and all of them are reminders of why I love to cook.
One of my personal goals three years ago was to bake my own bread and get use out of one of my several cookbooks that lined my little bookcase in the kitchen. This one, “Artisan Breads Every Day” by Peter Reinhart, has since become a must-have cookbook for our family and instead of sitting on a shelf, this one is always taking up precious real estate on my kitchen counter because we use it weekly.
Learning to bake our own bread has been so much fun and we have been working through each of the recipes, together as a family, since Mei was just a few months old! Peter Reinhart gives you the best of colored photographs to illustrate the techniques to knead, roll and shape bread. As well as how to make the best of each type of bread, starting with the simplest French bread recipe and increases the difficulty while building on the techniques and things you learned from making the previous bread as you advance to pizza, bagels, sandwich bread, etc. Peter has taught me so much about yeast and cold-proofing dough that has transformed bread for me into something that is simple, easy and tastes so much better made at home. What’s better is that we haven’t finished baking through his cookbook yet because every time we make a new bread, we fall in love with it and make it over and over again. Then we move to a different country and start over from the beginning to learn how the different humidity, regions and seasons affect the recipes that we have grown to love and depend on. It is absolutely a family affair and we take it with us everywhere!
Here are some of the recipes that we have posted about in the early years of our adventures with baking bread using “Artisan Breads Every Day” by Peter Reinhart:
- Challah Bread
- Ciabatta Bread
- Neo-Neapolitan Pizza Dough (the absolute best pizza dough, EVER!)
- French Bread
- Sourdough Starters from the Seed Culture to the Mother Starter, its all there and makes sourdough a pinch!
To kick off our Valentine’s Day Cookbook Affair Giveaway, I’m giving away one copy of Peter Reinhart’s “Artisan Breads Every Day” and an assortment of bread baking essentials from King Arthur Flour!
- One 5lb bag of Unbleached Bread Flour from King Arthur Flour
