Addictive Korean Beef Bowl! #SundaySupper

This week on Sunday Supper, we are focusing on Budget-Friendly Meals and there are plenty of fun dishes to be enjoyed! Be sure to check them out at, after the recipe at the end of this post!

Having no time or energy at the end of the day isn’t just a phenomenon that happens to parents ย – it happens to everyone. We all have busy schedules and more things on our to-do lists than can ever seem to be accomplished in a single day, or sometimes a week; and by the time you get home from work or school or running around, the last thing you want to do is slave over the stove for hours to make dinner. But instead of going out or grabbing take-out, you can make something like this! This Korean Beef Bowl is addictive, delicious and comes together in just under 30 minutes!

With all the places that we have lived, many places either don’t have take-out, hardly anyone delivers, and what is available isn’t too good or nutritious so it’s nice to have a recipe like this in your back pocket.

Our family always has rice on hand, it’s our go-to grain just like pasta may be the go-to grain for an Italian family. More than anything, when we are tired and want something filling and tasty, we opt for something that can be prepared quickly and served over a bed of rice. This dish requires three main ingredients, ground beef, green onions and rice plus a few seasonings and for such few ingredients that go into it, the resulting dish packs a punch of flavor! It is just satisfying and we really enjoy the nights where we serve this! I hope you enjoy it too!

  • 1.5 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 bunch of Green Onions, thinly sliced, white and green parts separated
  • 1/3 cup Brown Sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Crushed Red-Pepper Flakes, or more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Ginger (fresh or the dried spice will work in a pinch)
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced (or 1.5 tsp garlic powder)
  • Fresh Steamed Rice, for serving
  • White Sesame Seeds, toasted for garnish

Heat a frying pan over high heat until the pan is warm then add the ground beef, browning until there are no more pink bits. Drain the fat then return the pan to the stove.

Over medium high heat, add the white parts of the green onions to the ground beef and stir, cooking for 1-2 minutes until the onions begin to soften. Add the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, ground ginger and garlic. Stir thoroughly, tossing the sauce and spices with the onion and beef until the beef is thoroughly coated, warm and the sauce is thickened slightly.

Serve over hot, fresh steamed rice and add a generous sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds and some of the sliced green onions on top before serving. Enjoy!
